Pride coach closing in on 100 career victories

2001.01.14
Tyler Jones Just over three years ago, some people may have questioned the Connecticut Pride for hiring Tyler Jones (right), then the team's general manager, to succeed John Treloar. Jones has answered his critics by leading the Pride to three consecutive playoff appearances, including the franchise's first-ever CBA Championship in 1998-99.

Tomorrow night Jones can post another impressive addition to his coaching resume - 100 career CBA coaching victories. His stellar regular season coaching record currently stands at 99-77 (.563) overall. In the 55-year history of the CBA, only 22 head coaches have reached the 100-career win plateau.

"Reaching this mark would mean a lot to me," Jones said. "It means that I've not only enjoyed success, but longevity as well.

"But a head coach is only as good as the people he surrounds himself with, and I've been blessed to be around great assistant coaches and players that have helped me tremendously over the past three years."

On Tuesday, Jones was named American Conference Coach of the Month for December. The fourth-year coach won his fifth career Coach of the Month award for leading Connecticut to its most successful month in team history at 6-1(.857).

After starting the season with a road loss at Grand Rapids, Jones directed the Pride to six straight victories. During the team's six-game December winning streak, Connecticut held all six opponents under 100 points. December also saw the Pride register the league's best points allowed per game average (90.3). They also committed the fewest turnovers at 16.7 per game. For the month, the Pride posted a perfect 4-0 record at home, while battling to an impressive 2-1 mark on the road.

The Pride, currently winners of seven straight and owners of the best record in the CBA at 7-1 (.875), play on the road tomorrow night at Gary (Ind.). Connecticut will return home on Saturday and play its next five games at home at the State Armory in Hartford. The home swing begins this weekend with back-to-back games against the Fort Wayne Fury on Saturday (Jan. 6) and Sunday (Jan. 7). Both games tip-off at 7:05 p.m.
